Run Chart

In this tutorial, we’ll demonstrate how to draw a Run Chart in Glimpse to visualize a process over time by plotting a Line Graph that is accompanied by a horizontal line that displays the median.

First, add in the data from the table below:

Length of stay Week
66 Week 1
88 Week 2
83 Week 3
78 Week 4
70 Week 5
69 Week 6
53 Week 7
89 Week 8
68 Week 9
60 Week 10
79 Week 11
57 Week 12
49 Week 13
58 Week 14
53 Week 15
60 Week 16

Then, under Visual > Mark in the Inspector panel, set the Mark Type to Line.

Move the field Week into the X encoding to set the timescale. Deactive Title.

After, drag the field Length of stay into the Y encoding.

To adjust the scale on the Y-axis, go Visual > Encoding > Scale > Domain > Values, detick Include Zero and press the + button, select Number from the dropdown menu, then write 40. Press + again and enter 100.

To add points to the line, go Visual > Mark and active Point Overlay.

To add the median line to the chart, add a new Rule layer by going Insert > Layer > Rule from the top menu.

Drag the field Length of stay into the Y encoding and in the Inspector panel change the Aggregate to Median.

Under Title enter measure name (‘Hours’ for this example).

To customize the median line, go Visual > Mark > Stroke.

This concludes this tutorial on drawing a Run Chart. If you want to further customize your chart, please read the documentation.
