Pictogram Chart

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to draw a Pictogram Chart in Glimpse to visualize livestock data in a simple and countable way. This chart uses a series of icons to represent the values in a dataset. Each icon can represent one unit or any number of units (e.g. each shape represents 10).

Open the Data Grid from the bottom of the window and add the livestock data from the table below. You can duplicate each row using the Ctrl C and Ctrl V shortcut to add it faster.

Then, go to the top-right corner of the UI and click on Visual > Mark. Set the Mark Type to Shape.

In the Outline panel to the left side of the UI, select the Datum Index transform from the Sources list. Make sure that the toggle next to Datum Index is switched on.

In the Inspector panel to the right, in the Data section under Window, choose Rank in the first dropdown, the second dropdown should be set to None. Then, type in Rank in the last input. Below, under Group, select Livestock.

Now, from the left side of the UI, drag the transform token Rank into the X encoding and deactivate Axis by switching off the toggle in the Inspector panel.

Drag the field Livestock into the Y encoding and deactivate Title in the Inspector panel. That way, the label Livestock won’t appear to the left side of the chart on the canvas.

Next, drag the field Livestock into the Shape encoding and switch off the Legend toggle in the Inspector panel to make the legend dissapear from the canvas.

Now,let’s apply some animal icons to the chart. In the Inspector panel, go to the **Visual section. In Encoding, open the Scale dropdown and press the + button 3 times under the Range box. That way, you’ve just added a circle, a square, and a cross.

Next, scroll down to the Range below. Double-click on the top icon box (it’s empty) and type in “cow” in the Search input. Select the cow icon from the Animals category.

Set the middle icon to “pig”.

Set the bottom icon to “sheep”

You’ll see that the icons appear as very small on the canvas. To make them bigger, go to go Visual in the Inspector panel. Open the Mark section, expand the Size dropdown and and type in 70 in the Size input.

At this point, the icons are not fillet with any color, they only have outlines. To fill them with some color, expnd the Color dropdown, select Fill Color in Apply Base and use the Color Picker to choose your color.

Finally, to vary the color of the icons, drag the field Livestock into the Color encoding and deactivate Legend in the Inspector panel.
